Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) workers across the country observed "Protest Day" under the aegis of Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Central Labour Union on Wednesday to protest price hike, anti-workers policies and privatisation of Wapda.
The Wapda workers held rallies and also brought out processions in different parts of the country to press the government for acceptance of their demands.
In Lahore, Wapda Union held a rally outside the press club. General Secretary of Wapda Union, Khurshid Ahmed, Syed Sajjad Hussain Shah, Chaudhry Muhammad Sultan, Osama Tariq, Malik Noor Muhammad, Mian Muhammad Abid, Maqsood Ahmed and Rana "Muhammad Akram while addressing the rally appealed to all patriotic forces to extend their support to the struggle of Wapda workers against the conspiracy of the "WORLD BANK" which is bent upon to break the largest national institution.
They also demanded that the government should check price hike and bring the Mafia of hoarders and black marketers including sugar producers.
Khurshid Ahmad on the occasion welcomed the judgement of Supreme Court in relation to Pakistan Steel Mills which demonstrated that how national precious sliver was handed over on palter sum to the foreigner. He demanded of the President and Prime Minister of Pakistan to intervene to resolve the problems of workers. He extolled the Wapda workers to make concerted struggle for establishment of democratic and transparent and egalitarian system in the country. According to union spokesman, protest rallies were held at Peshawar, Mardan, Tarbela, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, Multan, Rahimyar Khan, Sukkur, Hyderabad, Karachi and Quetta.
