The unofficial increase in prices of milk still continues to reign in daily transactions in the metropolis, while the city government's concerned authorities have failed to bring down the prices in line with the official rate.
Earlier, the CDGK had fixed Rs 28 per litre as the retail rate and Rs 26 as the wholesale rate and directed the milk-sellers to comply with the official rates.
While, milk as an essential commodity is still being sold at Rs 30 and 31 in the city against the city government's official rate. Consumers have expressed serious concerns over the unofficial increase in milk prices and demanded of the high authorities to resolve the issue besides taking stern action against the profiteers forthwith.
Principally, the Deputy District Officers (DDO) Revenue Department of the CDGK are responsible to monitor and regulate the prices of the essential commodities in accordance with the officially notified rates.
While, the limited powers vested in the DDOs have allowed the wholesalers and retailers to overcharge for milk without any fear.
The other reason was also the lapse of the Sindh Essential Commodities Price Control and Prevention of Profiteering and Hoarding Ordinance 2006, gave the profiteers open heart to overcharge for milk and other essential commodities.
On being contacted the city government official told Business Recorder here on Wednesday that an emergency meeting would soon be called to draw a future line of action against the violators.
He said the inspectors had been given the magisterial powers besides other legally empowerment to crack down on profiteers and regulate the prices of essential commodities. Hoping, he said the issue would soon be resolved.
