Door to door enumeration for the preparation of new error-free electoral rolls will start on Friday, Chief Election Commissioner Justice Qazi Muhammad Farooq (Retd) said on Thursday. Speaking at a news conference in Islamabad he said that distribution of forms for enrolment of voters will be started on July 29.
He said the enumerators will visit each and every house throughout the country for the preparation of lists of family members from July 14 and also distribute the enrolment forms from July 29 for new error-free electoral rolls.
"This is the first step towards transparent elections". He said the number of computerised national identity card of Nadra is mandatory for the enrolment of names in the electoral lists.
He said step for the new electoral rolls was taken due to change in population including emigration of people from rural areas to cities, attainment of age of 18 years by the youth under Electoral Rolls Act, 1974 and Electoral Rolls Rules, 1974. He said the process for the receipt of forms from houses will be completed by September 11.
The Chief Election Commissioner said that elaborate arrangements have been made for the preparation of new electoral rolls.
He said a team of one hundred and forty-four Registration Officers, two thousand two hundred thirty seven Assistant Registration Officers, twenty-eight thousand nine hundred and ninety-two supervisors and eighty-six thousand seven hundred and forty enumerators has been prepared for the purpose. Five hundred judges of subordinate judiciary will be authorised to review the entire process in each district.
They will hear the applications, claims and objections of the complainants. The District Assistant Election Commission will act as Registration Officer, while the Assistant Registration Officers, Supervisors and Enumerators will be taken from the Education department.
He appealed to the women particularly in rural areas to get computerised National Identity Cards from Nadra and ensure the enrolment of their names in the Electoral Rolls. "They could play their role in the progress and development of the country shoulder to shoulder with the male members".
The Chief Election Commissioner also asked the youth attaining the age of eighteen years to also get the computerised national identity cards and enroll their names in the electoral lists. He also appealed to the people to extend their full co-operation in the preparation of new error free electoral rolls.
