China will consult Pakistan and other regional countries in its efforts to put forth an 'acceptable candidate' for the next UN Secretary General. "As traditional allies, Pakistan and China had been co-ordinating their position on important issues, like the next Secretary General," said a senior Chinese official while talking to APP.
The two countries had established a consultation mechanism at the bilateral level for taking an identical stand on issues of regional and international concern, he added. China firmly believes that next UN Secretary-General should come from Asia and Asian countries would keep solidarity.
The Asian countries need to co-ordinate the selection of a competent and prestigious Secretary-General, who was widely accepted by Asian countries, said the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Jiang Yu.
She told reporters that the Chinese government was firmly advocating the appointment of an Asian as the next UN secretary-general, she added.
Jiang said the election of next secretary-general was a major event of the United Nations and no Asian had held the post for 34 years. The Chinese government believes comprehensive consultations should be held on the selection of the next UN secretary-general, she added.
