The Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered release of Rehana of Kohat who was in jail in a Hudood case along with her husband and a 10-month son after reverting to Islam, and observed that the petitioner should also be released after the presidential orders.
The court directed them to furnish their personal surety bond of Rs 10,000 for the satisfaction of the trial court, which was also directed to conclude their case within two months. The apex court also directed the court to submit its report pertaining to progress of the case and advised Rehana to appear before the trial court. According to the details, Rehana was married with Azam Masih but she later reverted to Islam and her husband started torturing her but she escaped from her house and got married with Taqeer.
Azim Masih got registered an FIR against them and they were arrested on March 30, 2006. Rehana contended before the court that after reverting to Islam her previous marriage stands dissolved automatically, hence Hudood case could not be registered against her and her husband.
