Sialkot District Nazim Muhammad Akmal Cheema has directed the elected representatives of district assembly to immediately submit their development schemes so that work on the development projects could be initiated.
Akmal vowed that with the active co-operation of the elected representatives of the district assembly and with the co-ordination of members of National and provincial assemblies, Sialkot would be converted into a model district of Punjab.
Talking to reporters here on Friday, he said that elected representatives had also been directed to supervise development work, pay special attention to the use of quality building material and ensure speedy pace of the development work in their respective areas. The Sialkot district government, he said, had allocated Rs 2.25 million during the current fiscal period for the social welfare of special children.
He said the special children would be provided free textbooks, uniform, wheel chairs and hearing aid instruments, besides pick and drop facility and Rs 200 per month as stipend per month.
Cheema said step had also been taken for making the special kids a useful citizen of the society and to enable them to play their due role in all-round development of the country.
He revealed that Rs 130 million would be spent during the current fiscal year on the improvement of means of communication system in Sialkot district. Under the programme, all linking roads and highways would be repaired and reconstructed for ensuring smooth and safe travelling facility to the masses.
Akmal Cheema said that more than Rs 110.91 million had been utilised during the last fiscal year on the accomplishment of 72 schemes of roads, of which 39 schemes had so far been completed in the district. Apart from this, as many as 93 new projects, costing more than Rs 410.85 million had been approved by the district government, he added.
Special attention had been accorded to the completion of watercourses in the district and during the current fiscal year Rs 40 million would be spent on the completion of 50 watercourses in canal areas and 17 in Barani areas of Sialkot district, he added.
Akmal Cheema said that 67 percent of the total budget, which is Rs 1.84 billion would be spent on the promotion of education in the district during current fiscal year.
The District Nazim said that foolproof arrangements had been made for averting the possibilities of bogus recruitment and payments in the education department. The step, he said, had been taken keeping in view the serious irregularities and bungling in the education department.
Akmal Cheema said that Rs 50.20 million had been allocated for "primary school councils" for fulfilling the requirements immediately while Rs 25,000 each would be spent on the repair of 178 high schools of the district. More than Rs 10.10 million would be spent during current financial year on the establishment of veterinary centres and agriculture laboratory to provide facility to the farmers, he added.
The District Nazim said that special attention had been accorded to the proper utilisation of development funds and timely completion of the projects in the district.
