Heavy rains lashed Karachi, Hyderabad and various other parts of Sindh on Sunday causing power outages in many localities and inundating low-lying areas. In Karachi, heavy rain started at about 3:00 pm and continued for almost half and hour. The low-lying areas submerged in knee-deep water, while power breakdown adds to the miseries of the Karachiites.
In Hyderabad, the rain continued for hours and power outage caused immense problems for the residents, while roads and streets were inundated.
Though it was raining since Saturday night and drizzling continued the whole day with hide and seek of electricity but the two-hour-long heavy rain forced shopkeepers to shut down their business as all markets were deserted.
However, youths enjoyed rainy season as it ended hot spell. People thronged to Rani Bagh, Jamshoro Bridge and other places for recreation.
With rain on second day drainage system of the city which was already in shabby condition collapsed. It seemed that municipalities and other civic bodies were not ready to face the challenge of heavy downpour.
The monsoon rains also lashed Mirpurkhas and other towns of the district leaving low-lying areas inundated and disrupting power supply in many localities. The weather became pleasant after the downpour with frequent intervals in Mirpurkhas, Mirwah, Dighri, Jhuddo and other adjoining towns.
Reports reaching here said that as many as 100 fishermen who were in high seas on Saturday evening were missing and had not reached their homes. The Met office has predicted more rains especially in Hyderabad and lower Sindh districts of Badin and Thatta, which have received torrential rains.
