Punjab government has evolved a strategy for providing hygienic drinking water, instalment of water meters and to improve sanitation system in various districts of the Punjab.
Official sources told Business Recorder here on Sunday that more than Rs 1.5 billion would be spent on the completion of 800 schemes pertaining to water supply and sewerage in the Punjab.
A comprehensive survey was being carried out by Public Health Engineering department in different districts in Sialkot for ascertaining problems and estimating the project cost of replacement of rusty and rotten water pipelines.
After completion of the survey a master plan would be chalked for each district keeping in view the needs. The proposed programme would be accomplished under phases and it will ensure contamination-free drinking water to the masses.
The step had been taken under the special directives of the Punjab Chief Minister for overcoming the growing threats of gastro problem and water burn diseases, which were posing health problems in the Punjab. Under the programme water meters would also be installed at each water connection in Sialkot and other districts of the Punjab.
The prime concept of installation of water meters at consumer's connection was to create awareness about the consumption of water and to minimise the wastage of water.
In Sialkot the proposed work of replacement of rusty water pipelines would cost more than Rs 36 crore, sources added.
