Blue chip stocks rose on Friday as a government report showing weaker-than-expected July job growth increased expectations that the Federal Reserve will pause in raising interest rates next week.
But a drop in Apple Computer Inc shares helped push the Nasdaq lower and weighed on the broad market. Apple fell after saying it will likely have to restate earnings.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 31.78 points, or 0.28 percent, at 11,274.37. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 1.38 points, or 0.11 percent, at 1,281.65. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 6.90 points, or 0.33 percent, at 2,085.44.
