The Sales Tax House, Karachi has directed tax defaulters to file invoice of summary regularly otherwise they would face legal action. Officials in the sales tax house told Business Recorder that the defaulters had been asked that in case of consistent non-compliance with the legal requirement the department would take legal action, which would involve imposition of penalties on the defaulters.
The officials said that about 11,000 taxpayers were required to file summary of their purchases and sales on monthly bases. The data once received by the sales tax department is entered to refund system to help reconcile the information declared by the claimants of sales tax refund.
Only 65 percent of the taxpayers had been filing monthly returns, officials said, adding that about 4,500 are defaulters and they were issued notices. The Collectorate office has urged defaulters to submit their monthly summary regularly with time limit of prescribed format. Filing of the invoice summary would help the taxpayers to meet a legal requirement. It would provide taxpayer a quick processing of the refund claims associated with the summary, officials said.
The sources said that one reason for delay in the disposal of sales tax refund was non-receipt of the invoice summary from the supplier of the refund claimant. They said chambers, trade associations and representative bodies had been asked to influence their members for promptly filing invoice summary.
