Apropos Amjad Aziz Khan's letter on UBL pensioners, published in your letters columns on August 7, 2006, I fully endorse the views expressed by the writer. The bank has failed to raise the pension of the old employees despite time-to-time increase approved and granted by the government of Pakistan.
It may be added that according to the option given to us at the time of launching of the scheme against surrender of the provident fund rules applicable to government employees mutatis mutandis was to be applied to UBL employees as well.
However, despite inheriting billions of funds as reflected in the balance sheet of year 2001 (immediately before taking over the management and control) the management has failed to honour its obligations towards those old employees who had put in their heart and soul in establishing this great institution.
Most of us are now over 70 years of age and are living in pathetic condition.
Will the management of the bank look into the matter? Alternatively the Government of Pakistan, which held control of the bank for over 25 years before handing over the management to the private party, came to our rescue.
The Governor, State Bank of Pakistan, and the Minister of Privatisation are also requested to take notice of the pensioners. Since at this old age with hardly any resources it is not possible for us to enter into long drawn and costly litigation with the powerful management of the bank, the Chief Justice of Pakistan is requested to take suo moto notice of clear injustice being meted out to the senior citizens of the country.
