Rumours of late were taking rounds that the money- changers have turned into the Shylocks of Judaea baying for flesh and blood. What a blasphemy for the chosen ones, thousand apologies better mind your language. Some think it is a genetic disorder others say it is congenital. Come on do not defile the Temple.
Now some excerpts form "The Jesus Papers" by Michael Baigent. After Jesus ejected the moneychangers from the Temple, we are told, the blind and the lame approached him asking that they may be healed and children took up the cry.
Jesus knew well the reality of the political situation in Judaea under the domination of Romans. A question was posed by the Zealots, "Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not" to Jesus.
He asked for a coin. They (Zealots) give him a Roman denarius. Jesus looked at the coin and asked, 'Whose head this?" Whose name? "Caesar's," they replied "Very well" replied Jesus "give back to Caner what belongs to Caesar. -and to God what belongs to God (Mattew 22.19.22)
The Zealots were not satisfied then and even now to this day. How is it the money-changers do not give back the coin to whom it belongs metaphorically speaking - instead of misbehaving like Zealots. Are we looking for the return of Caesars or the gladiators have already descended in the arena. The amphitheatre of Middle East has become a necropolis.
The ambers of hatred and vengeance are stoked by the Zealots. The laments of innocent children, their cries and bewailing, the women are bereft of their wedlock, parents separated from their loved ones, mothers cut asunder from their off-springs remind us a never heard exodus of that large-scale and magnitude, nay it did the biblical exodus, in bygone days.
The heart wrenching hapless sobs and hiccups of little children traumatised by reckless bombing shorn of their parents with their faces smudged with dirt and grime would make even the very word shame look like a virtue. Some of these angels could not have this luxury as they were and are being buried alive never to rise again. "The tomb of unknown little angles" needs to be erected in the very heart of UNO building to serve as a heavenly shrine for humanity to bow before it in shame.
Those angles of humanity who live or are spared by freaks of fortune sit with their drooling faces, staring eyes like dimmed diamonds twirling their rose petal lips in agony, loneliness and despair, munching with their angelic hands sucking from the discarded cartons of drained out liquid. Some of them smile in consternation with their begging eyes" what have we done to deserve this" not a drop of sustenance only an empty carton to chew on. Then they clap with their thumping hands heaving sighs gesticulating never mind the nectar of the empty carton is for the chosen ones and they have drained it, They sway sifting on their little bottoms wondering is this the kingdom of heaven?
They yarn for those times when the little ones would say to their procreators "Jars of spring water are not enough any more" "Take us down the river. Their keepers would have obeyed showering affection, kissing their faces and hands like slaves to their kings, but Zealots have snuffed the life out of them.
As they say where have the parents gone. Is their no body to take them to the river, where has the spring gone, not only a drop is left to moisten their parched lips which they in vain try to lick. Where are their slaves gone leaving the little kings in lurch. To drink from the river is their birthright; let no one deny them that freedom.
Their little souls would haunt us, God's retribution is delayed but swift. He does not allow any Zealots to tinker with his creation till enough is enough. We can only beg his mercy but what has been wrought the inevitable has to have its way and sway.
Beirut is the city of perpetual mourning, despair and destruction. Looking at ground conditions and ubiquitous slaying of children in every which way possible decimating the scions of Lebanon the dye seems cast.
It is a slap on world's conscience is it dead or being persecuted or prostituted. Is the history at the brink of repeating itself? Indeed it seems half way through already like the encore of the biblical exodus as millions of Lebanese are made to flee. Like the two sides of a coin what is on its other side a Caesar in waiting or a Masada in making.
Sanity must prevail on both sides of the fence unless the Zealots are hell bent to resurrect the ghosts of crusaders with crescents and crosses to cross and to tread once again the present battle ground and the familiar terrain treaded by. them in the bygone days a dreaded prospect.
