Cotton, sugarcane and other standing crops worth millions of rupees were damaged on thousand of acres of land in Layyah district on Saturday night due to breaches in Paroor, Rakh Paroor, Sabzani and Rakh Sabzani four canals.
According to the affected people, the irrigation staff had deliberately made breaches in four canals Talkhani, Dhano Shah, Sial and Sahara in the forenoon after intervals. As a result vast area was inundated and came under deep water. As a result standing crops, including cotton and pulses worth millions of rupees were damaged.
Many buildings and houses also collapsed due to breaches in the canals and several square miles of area was stated to be under water and many people lost their lives due to snake bites.
The affected people also accused the irrigation staff of making breaches in the canals intentionally so as to grab funds to be allocated for repair of canals and breaches.
