Police chiefs may ask the government for new powers to dispense "instant justice" on the streets without bringing suspects to court, a police body said on Tuesday. It would be the modern equivalent of the "clip round the ear from the local bobby" to help tackle anti-social behaviour.
The Association of Chief Police Officers, which represents more than 300 senior officers, said it was in the early stages of looking at whether to lobby ministers for reform. "The idea is being explored," a spokesman said. "There may or may not be proposals."
