Advisor to Prime Minister on Finance and Economic Affairs Dr Salman Shah said on Wednesday that intellectual property is critical for a competitive economy as it has a special significance for socio-economic development in the ongoing globalisation movement.
"It is being used as a powerful tool for economic growth and social development, as globalisation effects the developing world. Sustainable development depends largely on hi-tech R&D base of the country and efficient information determination, a knowledge economy", he added. He stated this while speaking at inaugural session of WIPO roundtable on formulation and implementation of a national intellectual property strategy here.
Dr Salman Shah said the new concept of IP based society is gaining ground because IP efficient societies constitute the flagship of creativity and innovation for strengthening the information society and reinforcing the knowledge economy. Realising the critical IP-economy linkages, he said, the government has increased its policy focus on intellectual property management, Upgradation of intellectual property infrastructure is also an essential part of the government's economic reform agenda.
Integrated IP management now constitutes one of the foremost government priorities for institutional reform and restructuring under the Prime Minister's 2nd Generation Economic Reform Programme, he added. Thus, he said, IP has been mainstream and brought under the limelight of public policy by simultaneously establishing IPO-Pakistan, empowering FIA and activating Pakistan customs against piracy. Advisor to Prime Minister said there is also no dearth of financial commitment as the government has provided sufficient funds to meet the start-up requirements of IPO-Pakistan.
