An young, energetic and enthusiastic Shakeel Chandna has been elected President of Karachi Bridge Association for the year 2006-2007. He was elected unopposed along with the Vice President Nawaid Anjum and Secretary Irfan Saadat and the members of managing committee.
Shakeel Chandna has resolved to infuse accelerated bridge activity in the city. He plans to revive the master points system for qualification to participate in the competition for National Bridge Championship. Besides, he aims at attracting young blood to bridge and also to promote bridge on the national scale by holding inter-provincial and inter-club bridge tournaments under the aegis of Pakistan Bridge Federation. It is to be seen how far he succeeds in improving the bridge atmosphere in the city and stabilising the affairs of the Karachi Bridge Association.
Incidentally the pair of Shakeel Chandna and Nawaid Anjum, Vice President of Karachi Bridge Association, won the Karachi Gymkhana Summer Bridge Competition in first week of July 2006. Their victory in the competition was over seeded bridge players of national team who represented Pakistan in the international bridge competitions. But it was not entirely unexpected of the pair to lift the coveted Karachi Gymkhana summer bridge cup as the pair had some international exposure and bridge experience.
The winning pair attributed its success to a new system of play that they evolved. They employed drastically modified basic acol system of bridge with a touch of improvisation to the extent of adventurism. Anyway the pair left behind the field of twenty-nine pairs who participated in the tournament.
One of the deals in which the pair of Shakeel Chandna and Nawaid Anjum scored good number of points over the others is given below with aggressive bidding to reach a grand slam in seven no-trump. Whereas the other pairs stopped at six clubs and five clubs conceding great margin of points on this particular deal.
WEST LED DIAMOND FIVE:
When the dummy came down the declarer thought to himself that his guess of seven cards of club headed by king, queen with his partner was correct plus the king of hearts in the dummy which was also vital for the success of grand slam in no-trumps. If the club suit was of six cards then the grand slam would go down. It was purely an enlightened guess of valuation of dummy's hand to have seven cards of club and king of hearts.
The South won the lead of diamond five which was covered by queen of diamonds from the East with the ace of diamond and he ran the club suit discarding three losers in spades from hand on three good clubs in the dummy and claimed the contract. It was an aggressive and brave bid, which paid off whereas the other pairs declined to reach a grand slam on this deal.
