With a view to ensuring effective monitoring of sanitation work being carried out by the field workforce, the City District Government, Lahore, will provide as many as 50 motorcycles to the supervisory staff of its Solid Waste Management (SWM) department during the current fiscal year.
District Nazim Mian Amer Mahmood revealed this while chairing a meeting held to review sanitation situation here on Friday. District Officer Solid Waste Management Dr Tufail Siddiqui and other concerned officials attended the meeting. As many as 91 motorcycles had already been given to the regular employees of SWM for facilitating inspection of sanitation situation by them in their respective areas.
The district nazim directed for initiating necessary procedure for procurement of two mechanical sweepers, which would be used for cleaning major city roads. The sanitation staff was already using four such mechanical sweepers for this purpose. He further directed for making use of all the 52 waste-lifting vehicles that had been reserved for 'Performance Based Solid Waste Management System', for achieving desired results from this mechanism. The system of purchasing garbage from truck drivers, instead of paying salaries to them, had been introduced in Gulberg, Ravi and Shalimar Towns and had been a success so far, he added.
He asked the concerned officials for starting land acquisition proceedings for acquiring ground for establishing 'Land fill Site' at Multan Road near Sundar area. He told that the City District government had planned setting up two more compost plants at Ferozpur Road and Multan Road in collaboration with the private sector.
