Sindh police on Monday said it arrested two accused, having connection with al Qaeda, involved in suicide bomb attack near United States Consulate in Karachi on March 2, 2006 in which a US diplomat David Foy and three Pakistanis were killed.
Addressing a press conference at DIG (Operations) Karachi office, IG Sindh Police Jahangir Mirza claimed that a four-member group having connection with al Qaeda was involved in said suicide bomb blast.
Two of its members, identified as Anwar-ul-Haque alias Anwer s/o Khanim Ullah and Usman Ghani s/o Abdur Rauf were arrested early Monday morning from Hijrat Colony in limits of Artillery Maidan police station Karachi. Police was trying to apprehend third accomplice Qari Zafar.
According to IG police, suicide bomber identified as Raja Muhammad Tahir s/o Raja Muhammad Afzal resident of D-330, near Madina Mosque Landhi, Karachi who had explosives on his body was killed in said attack on March 2.
He said before attack, accused monitored activities of US diplomat for quite sometime, watched his route, timings, monitored all entrances and exits around US Consulate near Marriott Hotel. He said during initial investigation, the two accused, who confessed they were present near Marriott Hotel on March 2, 2006 said they used 400 pounds TNT and C4 explosives, filled in CNG cylinder, under seats and mudguards of car.
According to Jahangir Mirza, al Qaeda had already claimed responsibility of this suicide attack. The two arrested accused had taken part in Afghan Jihad, he said and denied any foreign national was also involved in suicide attack on US diplomat.
