Despite the issuance of directives from City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal, the filling of road potholes has not yet been undertaken by the concerned department of the city government, which are causing serious road communication problems for public.
Big and small potholes have been spotted on city roads during the monsoon rains that have made the smooth flow of traffic clogged in around every town. General public and students are facing serious commuting problems while traffic jams situation has gone from bad to worse in the metropolis.
Earlier, the City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal directed the works and services department to undertake the filling of road potholes at earliest in all 18 towns to disentangle the clogged traffic. Since then, the broken road surfaces are exposed as no immediate action from the said department has so far been taken place.
Several cases have been reported of cars and other four-wheelers stuck in potholes as roads were inundated by rainwater. This further exposes the negligence and failure of the civic departments to drain out accumulated rainwater from roads.
I I Chundrigar Road, one of the busiest roads in the metropolis has been left by the sewerage board at the mercy of rains and accumulated rainwater, which have badly hit the vehicular traffic on the road, besides leaving it with further potholes in shape of 'pitfalls'.
While, University Road from City Nazim Secretariat Civic Center to Peoples Chowrangi contains uneven surface. The road is already under construction from People Chowrangi to Jail Chowrangi, while the condition at Jail Chowrangi is worst.
Traffic at University Road is already jammed due to construction of Hassan Square flyover, while potholes on the road further bottleneck the traffic.
Shahra-e-Liaquat since Thursday's torrential rains, is still inundated by rainwater which is added by the sewerage water for choked drainage lines. The sewerage board has also failed to pump out accumulated water from the road.
Rainwater on M A Jinnah Road at the Boulton Market area has created big potholes. The big potholes, inundated by the accumulated rainwater, are posing serious threats to cars and motorbikes.
On being contacted, the city government officials told Business Recorder on Tuesday that they had undertaken job to patch up roads all over the city, while, accumulated rain and sewerage water were creating problems in filling the potholes. They said that their job to fill the road potholes was hindered by the rainwater still accumulated on the spots and needed to be flush out forthwith to continue the job.
They said that work on Saddar, Boulton Market and its adjacent areas, I I Chundrigar Road, Ziauddin Ahmed Road, CM House Road, Marriott Hotel Road, Cantt Station Road near railway bridge and other roads in the metropolis had been initiated and filling of potholes would be completed within 24 hours.
