Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government has decided to establish Kashmir Highway Authority (KHA) to repair the dilapidated road network for attracting tourists, Business Recorder learnt on Tuesday.
The KHA will be established on the lines of National Highway Authority (NHA). The government will also set up Tourism Development Authority (TDA) for the promotion of tourism in the AJK, they added in the AJK.
"Following a landmark victory in July 11 election, the Muslim Conference government has been pursuing to make the AJK a model welfare state," an high up of AJK government confided that the two issues, settlement of homeless and landless people and shifting the population of capital Muzaffarabad to a safer place, needs government prior attention for which necessary inter-departmental and governmental level consultations are being held.
Regarding compensation to October, 8 quake affectees, he said the federal government has been extending full support and an amount of Rs 1.1 billion is being transferred to the AJK government for this purpose.
He said AJK Prime Minister Sardar Atique Ahmed Khan had recently held meeting with a delegation of Pakistan Federation of Chambers and Commerce and Industry and asked them to expand their businesses to AJK for which, he assured them all out support of the government.
"Things are not in good shape, particularly after earthquake, and concerted efforts are being made, simultaneously, on various fronts including rehabilitation of people and steps for laying a firm foundation of development in AJK," he added. The affectees' fears about the fate of their dependants in the approaching winter is seen a major challenge for the new AJK government mainly because tedious compensation process of ERRA and absence of skilled manpower for reconstruction created numerous problems for the people instead of helping.
He said the Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA) has devised a comprehensive strategy for reconstruction in affected areas.
