Water & Power Development Authority (Wapda) will spend Rs 33 billion on various water projects in the current fiscal year, while Rs 23 billion were spent during the last fiscal. This was disclosed at a meeting chaired by Wapda chief, Tariq Hamid to review the overall progress of all ongoing water projects in the country here on Tuesday.
Member (Water) Wapda, Muhammad Mushtaq Chaudhry in his presentation said that the pace of work on the last phase of Mirani and Sabakzei dam projects was in full swing, while inclement weather conditions prevailing in and around the Satpara Dam was hindering work.
He was directed by the chairman to make every effort to ensure that the projects were completed on schedule and to maintain the pace of progress. "Wapda has accorded to priority to hydropower projects in view of the country's growing demand for energy," he added. A vocational training school at Chillas will soon start functioning by end of August, where local youth will be imparted training in various skills like machining, carpentry and plumbing.
Construction work on Thakot bridge will also start soon while work on the upgradation and widening of the Karakoram Highway was in hand.
The progress on Diamer-Basha Dam, raising of Mangla Dam, Gomal Zam, Rainee Canal, Greater Thal Canal, Kachhi Canal, Chashma Right Bank Canal, Allai Khwar, Khan Khwar, Duber Khwar and several other water projects was also reviewed.
