Professor Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, chief of Jamaat-ud-Dawa has been detained and restricted under section 05(1)(b) of Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance 1960 with cogent reasons to maintain the public safety and tranquillity.
This was stated by home secretary Punjab in reply to a petition filed before the Lahore High Court (LHC) against Hafiz Saeed's detention The LHC adjourned till August 25 the proceedings in a petition filed by Maimona Saeed wife of Professor Saeed. The court directed advocate general Punjab to appear before the court on next date of hearing and assist the court.
The petitioner contended that her husband is working for the welfare of down trodden people and raising voice for the oppressed Kashmiri people. The respondent government allowed the political and religious parties to hold public meetings on Independence Day but did not allow detainee to carry out activities. She said that the respondent government detained her husband illegally and with mala fide intention under the pressure of some foreign governments.
She therefore, prayed to the court to declare his detention as illegal and without lawful authority and set him at liberty. Home Secretary in his reply to the petition contended that detainee used to instigate the people against the government and deliver provocative speeches in violation of the law and section 144 of Cr. PC which is against public safety and maintenance of law and order in the city. The court adjourned the proceedings till next date of hearing as her counsel sought time to file a rejoinder.
