New barracks for female prisoners will be constructed in jails and in the first phase, barracks would be constructed in the central jails of Faisalabad and Rawalpindi. Advisor to Punjab Chief Minister and Chairperson Social Services Board Punjab, Mrs Saba Sadiq, stated this while talking to a delegation of women lawyers, here on Monday.
Saba maintained that provision of better social and legal services is the top priority of the present government for which President General Pervez Musharraf has taken a number of important steps including release of women prisoners from jails. She said that provision of legal aid to oppressed women is the responsibility of the government for which efforts are being made at every level. She also lauded the efforts of NGOs for providing legal aid to such women.
While appreciating lawyers' organisation for providing free legal aid to the oppressed women, she said that government would continue to patronise such organisations. The members of the delegation appreciated the services of social services board Punjab, regarding the release of women prisoners from jails.
