The workshop is being organised as a part of public awareness and outreach programme under its capacity building initiative, in co-operation with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (Wipo) under the EC-Pakistan Trade Related Technical Assistance (TRTA) programme.
The objective of the workshop is capacity building of enforcement officers of police, FIA, customs and judiciary for the improvement and upgradation of enforcement of intellectual property rights in the country.
Some renowned experts from Wipo, Geneva will be making presentations during this workshop which is expected to be attended by enforcement agencies from both public and private sectors of Pakistan. The inaugural session will be held at 9:30 am on September 12, 2006 at the auditorium of Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (Parc).
The intellectual property organisation of Pakistan (IPO-Pakistan) has embarked upon public awareness and outreach programme, ever since its establishment in April, 2005 in order to promote intellectual property rights and also to create awareness about the need for promotion and protection of creativity, research and development and related intellectual activities for building up national intellectual property assets.
This is being done in order to use intellectual property assets as one of the main drivers of economic growth in the backdrop of fast track globalisation of economies. For this purpose, IPO has been holding workshops, seminars, conference and talk shows at different fora, including universities, training academies and chambers of commerce and industry etc.
For the year 2006 a number of intellectual property related seminars and workshops have been scheduled with the co-operation of intellectual property friendly countries and Wipo.
Three such workshops have been held in Islamabad on Promotion of Geographical Indications (July 3-4, 2006), Protection of Copyrights (July 24-25, 2006) and Roundtable on Intellectual Property Strategy (August 16-18, 2006). Two more such events namely IP Judicial Conference (September 18-19, 2006) and Wipo Workshop on Madrid System of Trade Marks (December 2006) have also been lined up.
These workshops, seminars and conference are aimed at capacity building the stakeholders as well as enhancing public awareness about the need for protection of intellectual property in terms of patented for new inventions, Trade marks and service marks for business enterprises, copyrights for the writers and the creative community, and geographical indications, traditional knowledge, folklore and genetic resources.
Such a protection and promotion of the country's intellectual property sets is critical for sustaining and strengthening the ongoing high growth mode of the national economy and finally to achieve the goal of becoming an IP efficient society and IP-based nation.
