Here is how major stock markets outside the United States ended on Wednesday.
EUROPE STOCKS EXCHANGE: Inflation and interest rate worries came to haunt European shares again, pushing stock indexes to their worst close in nearly two weeks, with mining and technology stocks leading the march down. Heavily weighted energy stocks such as Total fuelled the market's selling momentum, as oil prices lingered around 3-1/2 month lows, while Nokia slid more than 2 percent as speculation persisted that the world's biggest handset maker may lower its earnings forecasts.
The FTSEurofirst 300 index of leading European shares shed 1.1 percent to 1,364.01 points - its lowest close since August 25 - accelerating losses after revised US data showed worker compensation up much more than initially thought.
FRANKFURT STOCKS EXCHANGE: The DAX index ended at 5,813.06 points, down 71.01 or 1.21 percent.
PARIS STOCKS EXCHANGE: The CAC-40 index closed at 5,115.52 points, down 57.33 or 1.11 percent.
ZURICH STOCKS EXCHANGE: The Swiss market index closed at 8,172.78 points, down 53.44 or 0.65 percent.
MILAN STOCKS EXCHANGE: The All Share Mibtel index closed at 29,063 points, down 188 or 0.64 percent.
SYDNEY STOCKS EXCHANGE: Shares fell 0.71 percent, as weaker-than-expected gross domestic product data for the second quarter raised doubts about profit growth in companies geared to the domestic economy, such as the banks. The benchmark S&P ASX 200 Index lost 36.8 points to 5,113.8, retreating from Tuesday's 3-1/2 month closing peak.
JOHANNESBURG STOCKS EXCHANGE: South African stocks slipped as mounting nervousness about the impact of expected interest rate hikes hit banks but a weaker rand and strong metal prices boosted gold miners. The All-share index closed at 22,375.73 points, down 62.75 or 0.28 percent. The All Gold index closed at 3,190.27 points, up 111.8 or 3.63 percent, while the Industrial index closed at 14,749.53 points, down 2.57 or 0.02 percent.
