The government has prepared an education policy to make the educational system meaningful by focussing more on quality instead of grades, said Federal Minister for Education Javed Ashraf Qazi.
He said this while speaking here on Tuesday at the presidential awards distribution ceremony to teachers, students and academician in recognition of their contributions in education. The awards were distributed among 35 students, teachers and academicians of all the four provinces, Fata and Azad Kashmir. The awards included Ezaz-e-Kamal, Ezaz-e-Fazeelat and Ezaz-e-Sabqat.
The minister hinted at an education policy that includes computer training from class six, English and Mathematics compulsory from class one and extra curriculum activities to improve what he termed "substandard education system" producing graduates not suiting the country's requirements.
"I don't mind if results go down but the education should be meaningful" said the minister adding that a string of technical institutes would be set up in all the provinces to generate skilled manpower for future needs of the country.
Qazi said the country was lagging far behind both in secondary and higher education. Villages don't have schools and students don't have colleges and quality education, he deplored.
The minister said that the market demand is technical education, which graduates produced by prevalent education system have failed to meet. Real graduate would not have shortage of opportunities and asked the students to opt for technical education to secure their future. He said that the new curriculum to change the education system was endorsed by all the provinces with few recommendations, which would be incorporated soon.
He dismissed the impression of deadlock between the federal and provincial ministries over the new curricula saying that all the recommendations forwarded by the provinces were acceptable and almost 85 percent would be incorporated.
