The Multan chapter of Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) on Tuesday expressed concern over low salaries of doctors, particularly the junior doctors serving in different teaching hospitals.
"House officers are working day and night in government-run hospitals, but they get a stipend of only Rs 6,210 per month, which is too meagre to meet the requirements of life," a PMA press release said.
It said that some house officers are exposed to contagious and life threatening diseases but there are no prescribed protective measures for doctors working at public sector hospitals. It added that a majority of private hospitals also lacked facilities to deal with contagious/lethal disease patients.
It said that even postgraduate students were working hard in order to become eligible for attempting specialisation examinations. It said that only a few recommended FCPS-II students get Rs 6,210 as stipend. It said there was no system of promotion for specialist cadre doctors and that they worked for several years in the same grade.
