Deputy Chairman National Volunteer Movement (NVM), Barrister Dr Muhammad Ali Saif has said the NVM is seriously considering launching of a massive campaign to provide shelter and employment to destitute women and children.
In an interview with the APP, He said on Tuesday the NVM was in consultation with leading donor institutions in this regard and soon after the conclusion of Clean Pakistan Drive, the initiative would be finalised. "The NVM would join hands with other national and international donor institutions and NGOs to provide basic amenities to the abused women and children.
The NVM was also working on a nation-wide extensive package to mobilise the masses to meet national goals," he said while elaborating the details of the drive.
Barrister Saif, who is also an advisor to the Ministry for Women Development and Youth Affairs, said the ministry was also making milestone achievements in ensuring rights to women and youth.
"The passage of Women Protection Bill 2006 would be a dream come true for women to restore their basic rights, honour and respect in the society," he said, adding it would be the second achievement after the grant of bail to women prisoners.
"This legislation would also contribute towards fulfilment of Pakistan's human rights obligations under the international conventions particularly Convention on Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)," he said.
Replying to another question, Barrister Saif said the NVM would launch a fresh membership drive of the volunteers soon after Eid-ul-Fitr as the NVM volunteers were furnishing exemplary contributions towards humanity services in both emergency and peace times.
Highlighting the details of Clean Pakistan Drive, Barrister Saif said the NVM was set to launch a nation-wide campaign to ensure safe, clean and hygienic environment in the country.
"We have finalised the programme and the NVM will collaborate with respective provincial and district governments. The drive would be launched from Lahore, and later would be extended to other provinces and cities," He said. He said the NVM aimed at reviving rich traditions of sacrifice and it would only be possible by paying tributes to the services rendered by the selfless volunteers for humanity.
"You see, volunteerism is a universal human character throughout the developed world. Unfortunately, his sacred passion could not flourish in the third world as the common man is alienated from the government system," he said.
He said malpractices of the past regimes refrained the people from participating in community services. "Now, as the deadly earthquake has made the peoples' contribution revived towards the community participation, the NVM aims at boosting the community participation in the government decision-making with a broad-based plan," he said.
"With the revival of democratic institutions and the strengthening of economic system, the donor countries and institutions are looking towards the progressive leadership more optimistically," he said and added that the UN was going to be the biggest contributor institution in the volunteerism sector.
"The NVM provides the institutional structure to channelise the sacrifices in collaboration with other institutions. Besides national and international welfare organisations, we are also taking on board the Capital Development Authority (CDA) who would impart training to the volunteers in handling the emergency situations," he added. Barrister Saif lauded the services rendered by Saudi Arabian government in relief efforts for earthquake victims.
