Speakers at a seminar on "Danger-silence at work" organised by Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Pakistan (ICMAP), said it was essential that employees, who were worried about possible or actual wrongdoing, were able to safely raise their concerns with the related authorities.
"This not only prevent (someone) doing really wrong, but will also promote accountability and show good corporate governance," they added. The law that protects whistle-blowers is in public interest so people are encouraged to speak out if they find malpractice in an organisation.
An employee can be protected from victimisation as a whistle-blower if she/he reveals information of the right type (qualifying disclosure) to the right person and in the right way (a protected disclosure).
The law covers types of malpractice, which are criminal offences, failure to comply with the legal obligation, miscarriages of justice, threats to peoples' health and safety and damage to the environment. The law also covers the deliberate attempt to cover-up any of these.
ICMAP President Sher Afgan Malik, Dr A K Khanzada MNA, Fatima Shah, Attaullah Vice Chairman Karachi Branch Council spoke on the occasion. The seminar was attended by representatives of national and multinational companies, chief executives, CFOs, economists and scholars besides ICMAP members.-PR
