"Pain is one of the most underestimated health care problems in the world today, particularly in this region," said Dr Gauhar Afshan, chairperson, organising committee of the 11th National Health Sciences Research Symposium, held in Aga Khan University.
The theme for this year's symposium was "understanding and managing pain; multidisciplinary approach". Speaking at the inaugural session, Dr Gauhar Afshan emphasised the urgent need to raise the profile of "pain management" in Pakistan. She also elaborated upon the objectives of the yearly research symposium of Aga Khan University.
Chief Guest Firoz Rasul, AKU President, welcomed the participants and delegates of 13 different countries and appreciated the organising committee's efforts for holding such important symposium on a universal but neglected subject of "Pain".
Patric McGown from United Kingdom and Professor Ramani Vijayan from Malaysia also delivered plenary lectures in the sessions.
A large number of anaesthesiologists, oncologists, neurologists and other health care professionals attended the two-day symposium in which many important areas of pain management were highlighted. A total of 66 research papers were presented on various issues of pain.
The National Health Sciences Research Symposium is an annual event by AKU on a topic relevant to Pakistan and the region. In the recent past, symposia have focused on reproductive health, mental health and health sciences education.-PR
