The Senate session on Tuesday was adjourned after a brief sitting to remember whom the government used to call a rebel, murdered Baloch tribal chieftain Nawab Akbar Bugti. Before the adjournment, the house offered Fateha for the Baloch nationalist and prayer for the health of Pakistan's nuclear bomb architect Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan.
Nawab Akbar Bugti, the chief of Bugti tribe and the head of the Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP), was killed on August 26 when gunship military helicopters pounded a bunker he was hiding in along with scores of his aides.
It was Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Mian Raza Rabbani that proposed the sitting of the house be adjourned for a day to remember a former parliamentarian in line with traditions.
He paid tribute to Bugti. "He (Bugti) was struggling for the economic and political rights of his people well within the framework of the federation", said Raza Rabbani.
"Shaheed (martyred) Bugti has been the member of the parliament, therefore, I will request the sitting of the house be adjourned for this day," he proposed.
Senate Deputy Chairman Mir Jan Muhammad Jamali adjourned the house till 1000 hours on Wednesday as Leader of the House Wasim Sajjad also agreed to the proposal.
Earlier, on a point of order, Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) Senator Professor Khursheed Ahmed asked the government to let a Senate committee meets Dr Qadeer as decided some two or three months ago.
"Some three months ago when reports about his (Qadeer) illness came, the government agreed to allow a Senate committee to meet him, but we are still waiting for the permission," the MMA leader said. "Now as Dr Qadeer's health has further deteriorated, I will ask the government not to hesitate in allowing us to meet the nuclear scientist who has done his best to make Pakistan's defence impregnable," Khursheed pleaded. The house also offered prayer for an early recovery of Dr Qadeer.
