The Communication and Works Department, Government of the Punjab, has commissioned Nespak to prepare a detailed engineering design and supervise the construction of Lahore-Sialkot Motorway.
Costing Rs 20 billion, the 99-kilometer long motorway project also involves the construction of ten bridges, six interchanges and nine flyovers along its route. The Punjab Government had further asked Nespak to prepare a design and layout for setting up three industrial zones on the motorway, each spread over an area of 3000 acres.
These industrial zones will promote trade and commerce activities in the region and boost up industrial development for which Sialkot, Gujranwala and Wazirabad were famous the world over.
Nespak will also prepare the layout and design of two Technical Universities as one German and one Swedish University have shown interest to open their campuses along the proposed motorway, a spokesman of Nespak said here on Wednesday.
The multi-dimensional benefits of the motorway project will bring colossal healthy changes in the social, economic and cultural values of the region, as several housing colonies will develop along its alignment.
The Punjab Chief Minister, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, had been taking personal interest in this project. He recently presided over a meeting where Managing Director Nespak, Karamat Ullah Chaudhry, gave a presentation on the project.
The meeting was attended by the Chief Secretary Punjab, Chairman Planning and Developments, Senior Member, Board of Revenue and Secretaries of the Provincial Departments of Communication and Works, Finance, Industries and Education.
