Political pressure and lack of enforcement staff are the main hurdles in implementation of the building code for new construction in the Rawalpindi district.
Notices were issued to 60 building owners for violation of building rules, but due to political influence, appropriate legal action was not taken against them, said a well placed source in CDG while talking to this scribe here on Wednesday.
The CDG is facing shortage of staff which could be met only with the approval of the Punjab government, he said adding that the construction of a biogas plant with the help of private sector is on the cards to dispose of the solid waste properly. For this purpose, Losar village near Chak Beli Khan has been chosen. The paper work for the project would be finalised soon.
He said at present, city government dumps solid waste under ground near airport. "There is no proposal to give back the sanitation and solid waste management to TMA Rawal Town, as district government took the charge of these departments on the orders of CM Punjab" he said.
He told this scribe that CDG has divided the Rawalpindi city into four sectors to manage the sanitation issues. Each sector has Chief Sanitary Inspector as in-charge and almost three to four hundred sanitary staff work under him in each sector. The source revealed that at present CDG has a workforce of about 1,500 sanitary workers along with 40 trucks, four dumpers, two shovels, two bulldozers and one excavator.
He said that City Government has decided to clean all the nullahs and drains twice a year whereas the cleanliness of Nullah Lai would take place before start of rain season every year.
