Technology Upgradation and Skill Development Company (Tusdec) arranged a presentation on World Trade Organisation (WTO) and its impact on the industrial sector of Pakistan here at its head office.
Majid Ali Wajid, an LLM degree holder from Cambridge, UK delivered the presentation. He was an international trade law consultant and presently working as consultant for International Trade Centre UNCTAD/WTO Geneva, Industrial Information Network, Planning and Development Department and Small Medium Enterprises Development Authority (Smeda).
Presentation on the objectives, functions and structure of the WTO was given, with explanation of the principles of a multilateral trading system. Participants were briefed on Pakistan's industrial policy and trade related investment measures with special focus on the automobiles sector and the textiles & clothing industry.
Giving examples of anti-dumping cases by and against Pakistan, Wajid suggested certain trade remedial measures. He stressed upon the need for our domestic industry to be wary of a surge in imports or any subsidies or dumping practices that may result in trade market distortion.
The agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) and Pakistan's stance in the Doha Ministerial Conference (November 2001) was also discussed.
