Pakistan Kissan Movement (PKM) has appealed to the Prime Minister, Shaukat Aziz to approve proposals of the Secretaries Committee so as to ensure timely start of crushing season in the country.
Secretary General PKM, Chaudhry Hanif Gujjar stated this, while addressing sugarcane growers' meeting on Friday. Hanif maintained that the growers had taken the parleys between the industry and the government positively and were expecting a positive outcome of it. Sugarcane growers were linked directly with the sugar industry, and only a viable sugar industry cane ensure survival, timely payments and good prices to sugarcane farmers, he stressed.
He said Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA's) proposals of imposing 20 percent duty on sugar imports and withdrawal of 15 percent export duty on sugar to Afghanistan, while barring Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) from offloading its stocks directly for two months should immediately be endorsed in the larger national interest as this surplus sugar situation had been created due to surplus import of sugar by TCP.
