8th October tragedy: Qazi for presenting funds distribution report in National Assembly
Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed has demanded audit of all funds received for the earthquake-hit areas and urged the government to table the report of their distribution in the National Assembly.
"We want audit of all funds the government has received and distributed for reconstruction and rehabilitation activities in earthquake-hit areas in the last one year through the office of the Auditor General of Pakistan and its report be presented to Public Accounts Committee and then tabled before the National Assembly," Qazi said at a press conference here on Sunday. He said that Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (Erra) has become hub of corruption and the government has failed to maintain transparency in distribution of funds, therefore, one year's performance of Erra be presented in the National Assembly.
To a question, Qazi, who is also patron-in-chief of Al-Khidmat Foundation, an affiliated organisation of Jamat-I-Islami, engaged in rehabilitation activities in quake-hit areas, said: "it is time to come on streets and launch a forceful agitation against the rulers." The forthcoming elections will bring no change in the country, therefore, agitation against the present rulers has become inevitable, he added. According to him, corruption has its roots in every public institution and even the hands of army are also not clean.
To a question about Nato activities in earthquake-hit areas, MMA chief said its troops had arrived here with a 'specific agenda' and left after achieving it.
Talking about the activities of Al-Khidmat Foundation, he said that its workers and volunteers did exemplary work in the earthquake-hit areas. He also pledged to continue work in the affected areas in future under the banner of Al-Khidmat Foundation.
Earlier, Liaqat Baloch, President of Al-Khidmat Foundation while presenting one year performance report of this organisation said in the first phase, four hospitals were set up at Bagh, Muzafarabad and Balalkot with the co-operation of Pakistan Islamic Medical Association (PIMA). Similarly 45 camp villages were established and free accommodation facilities and meals were provided to as many as 8 thousand families.
