The Punjab University students protested the expulsion of three students from the University here on Wednesday. Traffic on the Canal Road had to be diverted to other adjacent roads that created a massive traffic jam that continued for hours.
Law-Enforcing agencies including the traffic police completely failed to ensure smooth flow of traffic and the motoring public had to face hardships due to traffic blockage.
President, Students Action Committee of the Punjab University, Chaudhry Basharat had given the protest call against the expulsion of three students namely Abbas, Ayyaz and Rai Javed of Punjab Department, University Oriental College.
The protest aimed that the university administration had expelled the students because they had disclosed the vice chancellor's corruption amounting to million of rupees.
The students were only punished because their loyalty was with the country, the protestors embarked. The students held the protest on Shaikh Zayad Hospital Road, Barkat Market Road, Shahdi Khui Road, and roads leading to Thokar Niaz Beg that created a massive traffic jam around the new campus.
The students raised slogans against the vice chancellor Arshad Mahmood and Registrar Naeem Khan and demanded of the Chief Justice to take note of the vice chancellor's corruption. Addressing the protesting students, Chaudhry Basharat said that over Rs9 million were on construction of vice chancellor's house against the lawful limit of Rs 100,000 only.
Similarly, Professor Naeem Khan was posted as university registrar who is involved in corruption cases. He said that the students have right to highlight the illegal and unlawful acts of university administration, which is taking revengeful measures against the students.
Meanwhile, the Punjab University Deans committee in its meeting held here on Wednesday condemned the blockage of roads by the students and decided to build boundary fences around the university hostels so that the students activities could be checked.
