Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) recovered 7102 kilograms contraband (charas), seven kilograms opium and 1.1 kilogram heroin and arrested six smugglers, including a union council nazim of Charsadda in four different operations.
Briefing the journalists here on Thursday, the ANF Rawalpindi regional director Brigadier Tahir Saleem informed that the highest ever cache of 6640-kilogram of charas was recovered from a truck bearing No P-2059. On a tip off, the ANF team intercepted a truck at Attock Khurd, which was loaded with firewood.
On search, the ANF recovered 6640-kilogram of charas concealed in hidden cavities. Two persons, Musharraf Khan of Gul Bahar Peshawar and Mohabbat Khan of Nowshera were arrested while the truck was impounded, he said.
In another operation, he said, the ANF staff stopped a Toyota car number APL-6 at Tarnol crossing and recovered 440-kilogram of charas and seven kilograms opium. Two persons, including a Nazim of Hassanzai Union Council of Charsadda district Syed Arab Shah and his driver Ibrar Hussain were arrested.
Brigadier Tahir said that in third operation, the ANF staff stopped a bus No C-1144-Mardan coming from Peshawar at Mullah Mansoor and recovered 21.600-kilogram of charas hidden in ladies clothes in two shopping bags. Smuggler Sher Bacha of Akora Khattak was arrested, he said. He said that one Ghulam Rasool of Gilgit was arrested at Soost post when he was going to Kashgar (China) and upon checking recovered 1.1 kilogram of fine quality of heroin hidden in his suitcase.
Brigadier Tahir said that in the past few months the heroin smuggling to China has increased and so has increased the vigilance by the ANF. During the last nine months, 45 persons have been arrested at Islamabad international airport in 30 different cases while 27-kilogram heroin was also recovered from their possession. At Soost, he said 26 people were arrested in 17 cases and 17-kilogram heroin was recovered.
The ANF regional director said that Afghanistan was producing 90 percent of heroin being consumed in the world and it is being smuggled from three roots, including, Central Asian Republics, Iran and Pakistan. Pakistan, he said, was a transit route. But it is suffering as a result of availability of drugs and the number of addicts is increasing.
