Human smugglers allure about one million job seekers of the third world countries every year with hope of going abroad to earn large amounts of money. Sources in FIA reveal, the traffickers are part of the international mafia.
These agents earn riches for cheats who win over influential and other big wigs manage to escape from consequences. This is why efforts to bust such a mafia has failed and human smuggling goes on unabated.
Human trafficking is such an attraction that even resourceful countries like America, Canada and the European Union have failed to check the same. The FIA has rounded up about 1000 notorious human traffickers and their agents and brought them to book but the vast majority is still operating.
The FIA has recovered ill-gotten wealth from human traffickers to the tune of Rs 200 million, sources said. According to them, unemployed youths eager to earn adequately willingly part with from Rs 0.5 million to 1 million for seeking employment abroad. Pakistani agents hand over aspirants to Iranian counter parts who in turn send them to Turkey across the border of Iran. Intending immigrants are thereby sold out to Turkish agents who send worn and weary immigrants to Greece by sea route through ferries boats or steamers.
Some are made to travel on foot and quite many die of hunger hardships and sickness on the way. Those who survive have to face firing squads of border security forces or coastal guards.
The said illegal immigrants of Pakistan led by agents of human traffickers enter into Iran via Balochistan in two groups. One group is led to Turkey via Iran and Oman while the other proceeds to Greece.
They said that as many as 767 immigrants of Gujranwala region were deported from Turkey or Greece and held by FIA Gujranwala Directorate in last few months. FIA has booked them under immigration laws and they face threat of rigorous imprisonment for years. The FIA office was set up here in November 2003 and was declared as police station in April 2004 but has no lock up or jail of its own.
The central jail is already over crowded. with The actual capacity is1000 inmates but currently it is housing about 4000 prisoners- condemned and under trial prisoners.
