Sindh High Court Hyderabad Circuit Bench issued status quo here on Wednesday against lease of Lakhra Power Plant (LPP) at Lakhra on Indus Highway in Jamshoro district. A PPP MNA and senior advocate of Supreme Court stated this while addressing a news conference here on Wednesday.
He said that according to verdict given by Supreme Court in Steel Mill case no privatisation could be held without making advertisement in media and without estimating the value of assets of the plant in question.
He said the law of privatisation also includes lease and as Lakhra Power Plant (LPP) was singed to be leased, so he had filed a petition in Sindh High Court challenging the lease of LPP.
He said privatisation is meant to sell the plants etc to shed the foreign debts and to reduce poverty. He said LPP is biggest power plant in country which produces 150MW electricity from coal. He said the lease was singed with the company, which is favourite to Chairman Wapda, without advertising the lease and without valuing its assets and all was done secretly.
He said he was approached by labour union, on whose behalf he filed petition in SHC, which gave status quo and has issued notices to chairman Wapda, Federation of Pakistan, Federal Ministry of Water and Power and Privatisation Commission to submit their replies on October 31, 2006. He said the LPP has 1,000 workers on regular basis and apart from them 5,000 others earn their livelihood from the plant.
