Professor Dr Mughees-ud-din Sheikh, Director, Institute of Communication Studies, Punjab University and Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences, was conferred UN award in recognition of his meritorious services to the victims of last October's earthquake. United Nations Resident Co-ordinator Jan Vandemoortele conferred the award at a ceremony here.
Punjab University under Dr Mughees' supervision set up FM 104.6 radio station and presented programmes for the quake victims which boosted their morale and encouraged them to face the natural calamity with great courage.
Dr Mughees also held disaster reporting workshop, set up radio listeners club in quake-hit areas, arranged media assembly in disaster area besides carrying out empirical studies there. Dr Mughees was also declared the best teacher of the Punjab University in 2005 and South Asian Publication declared him `media laureate' and conferred `media star' award.
The Institute of Communication Studies is the only department of any South Asian university which has played such a significant role in mitigating the sufferings of quake victims.
