During this time, homes are thoroughly cleaned and windows are opened to welcome Lakshmi, goddess of wealth. Candles and lamps are lit as a greeting to Lakshmi.
Gifts are exchanged and festive meals are prepared during Diwali. It is celebrated to commemorate the homecoming of Lord Rama, his wife Sita and brother Bharat after spending 14 years in exile. On the eve of Diwali, children build small mud houses known as 'Diwali Ghar'.
