Punjab Food Minister Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal has said agriculture sector constitutes 25 percent of GDP, while 45 percent of total labour force is associated with this sector. While addressing the National Food Conference held here on Saturday.
Punjab Food minister said that food security was a must for achieving national security while investment in agriculture sector was needed in term of advanced technologies, economic inputs and national resolve for more production.
Chairman, PCSIR Dr Javed Arshad Mirza said on the occasion that agriculture resources are shrinking at national as well as global levels. 'World over 850 million people are malnourished while 1.4 billion people are without clean drinking water. Daily income of 1.3 billion people is lesser than one dollar', he said. In Pakistan, 76 percent area is affected by erosion while 2.1 million hectare land has lot to water logging, he said, adding that PCSIR is striving hard for improving the food status in the country through development, research and consultancy.
