Kenya's leading tea producer launched a series of branded teas on Friday aimed at value addition and increasing local consumption to counter falling global bulk tea prices.
Kenya is among the world's leading exporters of black tea together with Sri Lanka, but experts have said it locks out earnings by exporting loose tea which is packaged by importers in their respective countries.
"Due to falling bulk tea prices globally, we have switched to exporting KTDA (Kenya Tea Development Agency) teas in value added form and now we want to sell pure KTDA teas in retail form in the local and export markets," said Lerionka Tiampati, KTDA's managing director. The new KTDA teas, known as Jani - the Swahili word for leaf - will be available in local supermarkets in green, orthodox and black variants.
