Former world number one Serena Williams will launch her 2007 Australian Open campaign at the Hobart International, a lower tier event starting the week before the first grand slam of the year.
"I'm really looking forward to starting the new year at the Hobart International," Williams said in a statement released by tournament organisers on Friday. "I am determined to return to the top of the rankings and think that preparing for the Australian Open at Hobart will be a great start."
Williams won the Australian Open in 2003 to complete a sweep of the four grand slam titles when she was at the top of women's tennis, then won the tournament again in 2005 but has struggled ever since.
The 25-year-old has not won a grand slam title since after being plagued by injuries and poor form and has plunged to 95 in the world rankings. "It's terrific news that the Hobart International will be able to showcase a marquee player like Serena at the 2007 event," Tennis Australia's director of player development Craig Tiley said.
