Population Welfare Ministry will hold an international conference on December 20, in which experiences of participating countries regarding 'best practices' for achieving the population reduction goals will be shared.
Sources told Business Recorder on Tuesday that aim of the conference is to develop effective measures to control population growth. Population Welfare Minister will brief the press before the start of the conference.
Meanwhile, communication and population education wings of the ministry briefed the Minister Shahbaz Hussain regarding population welfare projects and their implementation. The minister said that more emphasis would be laid on district and tehsil level projects with the help of councillors, lady councillors, Madressah and mosque Ulema so that local governments could play their role effectively to bring population welfare awareness among general masses.
According to current population reports, the country's population has increased up to 161 million and Pakistan is sixth world's populous nations. The country's 35 million population is living below poverty line, whereas additional investment required to maintain per capita income at the existing level is $6.403 billion.
The ministry has long-term objective to reduce population growth rate to 1.3 percent annually by the year 2020 and reduction in fertility level to 2.1 births per woman.
