The City District Government of Rawalpindi (CDGR) has constructed 173 educational institutions with the cost of Rs 100 million besides establishing 474 informal educational institutions to increase literacy rate in the district.
The CDGR set up 474 informal educational institutions including 350 literacy centres, 5 new institutions for special children, 12 early childhood educational centres, 41 non-formal basic educational centres and 65 computer centres in government schools, said the City District Nazim, Raja Javed Ikhlas while talking to different delegations in his office, on Saturday.
He said that the government constructed 58 shelterless schools with Rs 68.868 million and constructed additional classrooms of 115 schools with a cost of Rs 27.752 million. The government also upgraded 125 educational institutions, established 9 science laboratories. It also constructed 9 high schools, 2 college buildings and recruited 2548 teachers on contract basis, he added. The efforts of the government in education sector have helped in increase the enrolment by 6 percent.
Nazim said that the Provincial Government provided Rs 1.9866 billion for development projects which includes Rs 274.90 million for Punjab Educational Sector Reforms Programme (PERSP), Rs 172.9 million for Chief Minister's Programme for Educational Development, Rs 950 million for Chief Minister's Programme for Rural Development, Rs 40 million for Chief Minister's Programme for Health, Rs 27.1 million for Drought Emergency Relief Assistance (DERA), Rs 129.8 million for DIMRIC while Rs 388.6 million for Tameer Pakistan Programme and Khushal Pakistan Programme, he added.
He further said that the annual budget of the CDGR was Rs 3.1592 billion including non-development expenditure of Rs 2.8484 billion, development expenditure Rs 233.1 million and development schemes through Citizen Community Board (CCB) Rs 77.7 million.
Giving a break up of the Annual Development Programme of Rs 310.84 million, he said the major share ie, 50 percent goes to road sector followed by 25 percent to CCB, 11 percent to electrification, 06 percent to education, 05 percent to health and meager 3 percent to agriculture sector.
Under the PESRP, Rs 274.904 million were spent on 809 schemes for provision of infrastructure and Rs 23.338 million were spent on 36 schemes for provision of furniture to educational institutions. Under Chief Minister's Accelerated Education Package Rs 172.9 million were spent on 40 schools upgradation and construction.
