Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre has organised an 'Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day' on November 27 at its premises. About 15,000 women are affected by ovarian cancer in Pakistan yearly. This is the second most common neoplasm among Pakistani women after breast cancer. Despite this, most women are not familiar with its symptoms.
The aim of this awareness campaign is to encourage women and their doctors to notice any persistent symptoms and to take remedial actions early so that survival rate can be improved.
Professor Hilary Calvert a renowned medical oncologist and research scientist, presently working as Clinical Director and Professor of Medical Oncology at the Northern Centre for Cancer Treatment, Newcastle General Hospital, will deliver an informative lecture on this topic. He was involved in the development of anti-cancer drugs and was a pioneer in treatment of ovarian cancer. Calvert's formula is still used internationally. Professor Calvert was awarded the Pfizer Award for Innovation Science in 2005. This prestigious award is made annually to an Academic Scientist whose innovative research has made a significant impact on the discovery and development of new medicines.
A large number of eminent doctors, medical professionals, patients as well as members of women health NGO's are likely to attend this function.
