The first in a series of nation wide workshops opened here on Monday aiming to build the capacity of journalists on economic issues.
The workshops, organised jointly by ADB's Pakistan Resident Mission and the Ministry of Finance, will provide participating journalists with a solid foundation for improved economic analysis on global and national economic issues in the media, says a press release.
"The training is designed to offer the journalists enhanced technical knowledge of key economics principles," Dr Salman Shah, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Finance, said on opening the workshop. Chief trainer at the workshops is A R Kemal, former chief economist and former director of the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics.
The subject modules to be covered include investment and gross domestic product; inflation, its measurement and the monetary policy; budget, fiscal deficit and public debt; and balance of payments and external debts.
Further four-day workshops will be held in Karachi and Lahore early December. The workshops would enable journalists to enhance their knowledge by analysing policy changes and their interaction with various economic variables.
The interactive training aims at improving the scope and quality of economic reporting. The workshop was attended by leading print and electronic media journalists.
