A seminar to mark the International Day on Elimination of Violence against Women with the theme "Violence! Do we really care?" was organised by the Aga Khan Social Welfare Board for Pakistan at a local hotel.
The representatives from various non-governmental organisations (NGOs), Ministry of Women Development and the Aga Khan Development Network attended the seminar. Board Chairman Hussein Tajani, in his welcome address, spoke about the magnitude and the wide spread nature of the problems being faced by Pakistani women, and hoped that all the participating NGOs would join together for awareness and protection of women's rights.
Fouzia Chisti from the United Nations Association of Pakistan reflected the UN role and the impact of millennium development goals in Pakistan. The seminar also covered workplace issues faced by women as a very important but ignored fact. Shirkathgah Women Resource Centre's Director Najma Sadeque, in her address on workplace-related issues, highlighted the impact of globalisation.
The participants got an insight into this very important human rights issue from the speech delivered by Lawyers for Human Rights President Zia Ahmad Awan.-PR
